Chinese Mantis

Tenodera sinensis

Description:

I would like to know the scientific name of this praying mantis.

Notes:

It was found on the side of our home - Autumn - Oct 22, 2012 we have had freezing nights with lows in the 30's. Do they die? This one was very large. Larger than the palm of my hand.

Hi dbgeorge2dover! Super spotting. They do die but seem to survive pretty late in the autumn (the females lay their eggs in the fall).

This is most likely a Chinese Mantid, Tenodera aridifolia sinensis:

Hope this helps!
