California Newt (Rough Skinned)

Taricha torosa

Description:

Not to be confused with the Rough-skinned Newt-Taricha granulosa granulosa. This looks similar there are some differences. This one has it's eyes that extend the profile of the head, that is consistent with the Torosa. “Torosa,” is latin for muscular or fleshy But this one still has the slightly rough or dry skin with texture like the Granulosa. Orange/yellow belly with this one having the darker skin. This one could get to be up to 8" long.

Habitat:

found near water but not exclusive to it. Though it has been mentioned it migrates between Dec- May, I found this one heading towards a creek (but away from the Lake) across an asphalt trail. Could be found in marshy areas- shaded forests.

Notes:

spotted on a trail near Lake Chabot Regional Park.
