Short tailed shrew

Blarina brevicauda

Description:

Very small mammal with short velvety grey fur and a short tail, pointed snout and whiskers. Front feet are different than the more specialized front feet of a mole.

Habitat:

Woods and wet areas of the northeast.

Notes:

Saw this shrew in our backyard by the bird feeder and followed it along the outside wall of the house as it rummaged and ate insects along the way. The house is next to a stream and woods.
