White Ash

Fraxinus americana

Description:

I figured it was time for me to learn about trees by their bark. The bark of the White Ash forms a diamond shape (like a woven basket) and it is corky. The tree is unmarred by knots. The tree is simple in its form, nothing fancy here. However, we have a small grove of them growing in a field where they most likely provided shade for farm animals. The trees are about 80 feet tall and deciduous.

Habitat:

forest.

Notes:

The wood is hard and used for making baseball bats, paddles, tennis rackets, hoe and rake handles, bow and arrow, and furniture. Ash is a member of the Olives.
