Then you certainly have Carpinus caroliniana aka musclewood, ironwood or blue beech.

I definitely remember the bark was smooth, almost beech-like.

Do you remember what the bark looked like? The leaves of these species are very similar; however, each has equally distinctive bark. Otherwise, its just a guess on my part.

Thanks for the help, Travis. I think Carpinus caroliniana is a better match because I did not see any catkins, as in Oystra virginiana, which the catkins appear as the new leaves do. What do you think? Unfortunately, I don't have any other photos. I'l remember that for next time. Thanks a lot for the help.

Do you have a picture of the tree/shrub? It looks like either Carpinus caroliniana or Oystra virginiana.
