Western meadow rue, male plant

Thalictrum occidentale

Description:

Tall herbaceous annual covered with small flowers that had a minimum of petals and many drooping apparent stamen of a dark red color that shook like silent windchimes in a slight breeze. No leaves on the upper part of the plant.

Habitat:

Under tall oak and ash trees in a Willamette Valley woods that is often flooded in winter.

Notes:

I thought I'd seen all the wildflowers of the area; this one is entirely new to me, and is not very frequent.
