Odocoileus virginianus
A group of white tail deer were moving through our property so I went out to try to get some photos of the buck with them. I took 2 images of the group and 4 of the buck. They are horrible pictures since I was so far away from them. I uploaded the pictures to my computer and was going to delete them until I saw the doe on the right. When they ran into the front yard I didn't notice any of them running strangely or any signs of distress. At first I thought maybe it was a shadow of some kind but the sun is shining directly on the deer. The hole in its side appears to be healed. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Could it just be a deformity of some sort?

Sorry for the late reaction but I only saw your spotting now. A doe that I had been observing for several years came one day with a huge hole in her back; you could see down into the muscle and I thought she might die. She had likely been attacked by a coyote. After some time, however, she healed up completely. Deer have an amazing recuperative ability. I am adding the scientific ID to your spotting; this blog explains why it is important on Noah: http://blog.projectnoah.org/post/2870249...
