Red-eared Slider

Trachemys scripta elegans

Description:

Native to the Midwest United States, this species has been introduced and naturalized in many other areas within North America and around the world due to the pet trade and uneducated owners releasing their pet turtles to the wild when they no longer wanted them. This species can be distinguished from other species of similar looking turtles by the red marks on the head, just behind the eyes.

Habitat:

Freshwater lake. Rockwood Park, Virginia.

Notes:

This species is the most popular species of turtle sold as pets.
