Bromus diandrus
1.8 metres tall on a beautifully smooth, narrow and hollow stem and very svelt tapered, hanging seeds of about 50mm long with extended fine deep red tails. Tints of purple-red at their tops. A very attractive grass at this stage of growth.
In railway cutting pathway.
Picture this http://www.hear.org/starr/images/images/... Thanks to Travis Morse for clue on ID... I chose the one that suited the habit and the recorded distribution. Also called "great brome" and "ripgut brome". Here's the problem though... Wikipedia says the plant is up to 3 feet tall but Ausgrass says 1.5 metres (5 feet)... and this specimen was easily six feet. !!!? .... added pic #4 taken 1 month later when the seeds have emptied...

Is B.diandrus possible? Or is there something even taller?
Thanks for that Travis. I will check it out later. Might try for some more shots of the base and leaves etc. Still amazed at how tall it was - all other grasses around here are at best knee high at the moment.
This looks like a brome grass. Perhaps smooth brome (Bromus inermis)
