Bottlenose dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

Description:

Spotted in subtropical Tenerife, but they exist as far north as Scotland. The size of bottlenose dolphins varies with temperature (!) growing alot larger in the colder environments, such as Moray firth (average length 4 m), than further south (down to 2.5 m). The bottlenose is uniformally grey (varying dark to light) aside from the underside that is white.

Habitat:

The bottlenose dolphin is a widespread dolphin species found across the global temperate and tropical oceans.

Notes:

The permanent 'smile' and ability to learn complex tricks have made this dolphin species favoured for aquaria all over the world - particularly after the tv series and films about Flipper. I would strongly encourage anyone to aim for seeing these beautiful creatures in the wild, where they belong.
