Jesus Christ Lizard

Plumed basilisk

Description:

The Jesus Christ Lizard, also known as the Basilisk, is named for its ability to run on the surface of water. This type of Basilisk is known as the Plumed Basilisk or Green Basilisk due to its bright green color that provides excellent camouflage in the dense rain forest where it lives. This lizard is clearly a male due to the crest on its head, along with the other two crests along its back and tail. It also has small bluish spots along the dorsal ridge and black stripes on its tail. It was about 80 cm long, including its tail.

Habitat:

Tropical rain forest of Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica

Notes:

Spotted in Cahuita National Park, Costa Rica
