Anas clypeata
Duck. 17-20". Green head, white body, chestnut-brown flanks. Large, shovel-shaped bill.
Seen at Green Cay Nature Preserve.....wetlands, marsh.
The Northern Shoveler feeds by straining water through comb-like teeth along the edges of the large upper bill which leaves behind aquatic animals, plans and seeds. It favors broad, shallow marshes which allow it to feed in this manner. The Northern Shoveler in the third picture, I believe, is taking in a mouthful of water.

Hi, Seema.....thanks for the comment! There was lots of mud for him to probe at Green Cay; it is home to a wide array of migratory birds.
Thanks, PerilsofPlastic!
