Opium Lettuce

Lactuca virosa

Description:

I've been watching these weeds grow everywhere since March -- still don't have an ID. Some type of hawkweed? Any ideas? They're pretty smooth, except the spiny hairs along the stem and vein on the back of the leaves. They can grow really tall -- haven't seen one yet as tall as me, but maybe 4ft so far?

Habitat:

Sidewalk cracks in a city park.

They're essentially the same, the biggest difference it the leaf shape. Virosa is more oval shaped, and serriola is very obviously serrated, like an exaggerated dandelion leaf.

I've been doing some research and it also looks a lot like L. serriola. Any idea on how to tell the difference?
