Downy Woodpecker (male)

Picoides pubescens

Description:

Small, approximately 6". White underbody and back beneath wings. Wings are black with white areas. Bill is short and stubby. Red patch on nape of neck.

Habitat:

Woodlands.

Notes:

Thanks dschultzjr; I didn't know the Downy Woodpecker is the only white-backed woodpecker! Thanks, too, Jellis; I experienced a slight technical difficulty but got some great help with the scientific name.

Liam....thank you for adding the scientific name for me. I think yesterday's full moon was messing with me ;) I'm going to have to admit that I really don't know what a cache is or how to clear it.....

Downy Woodpecker/Hairy Woodpecker: Males have a red patch on the back of their head. The only woodpeckers with white backs.

The scientific name is Picoides pubescens. If you add that to the profile it will enter into the database.
