Cercopithecus lowei
Medium sized monkey, 60 to 70 cm n height (without tail). Its coat, including the crown, is olive-yellowish, darker on hips and legs. Underparts are very light in color, almost white. Its tail, like other guenons, is long and straight and measures longer than their body. Whiskers are densely furred, with dark grey mask around eyes and white narrow band outlining the mask. .
This monkey was seen roaming around our guesthouse in Grand Bassam - forested area close to the beach. There is also plenty of stagnant and running water in this zone. At first I thought it was a captive animal, since it was so accustomed to people and unafraid even when photographed; but I was explained it was a part of a larger group staying in the forest and roaming around the beach often.
I still have my doubts if this specimen is C. cambelli, C. mona or C. lowei... I find it very difficult to distinguish among the three... Moreover, C. lowei was until recently, counted as a subspecies of C. campbelli. I decided more based on distribution maps than anything else... so, would welcome a comment. Thanks in advance
