Spotted-eye Syrphid Fly

Eristalinus arvorum

Description:

Eristalinus arvorum (Fabricius, 1787). Eristalinus is a genus of hoverfly of family Syrphidae. Most species have very distinctive eye marking in the form of spots or banding, though these features may fade on some preserved specimens. Most are stout flies, and are nimble flyers.

Habitat:

Backyard garden.

Notes:

Classification: Phylum: Arthropoda, Class: Insecta, Order: Diptera, Family: Syrphidae, Subfamily: Eristalinae, Tribe: Eristalini, Subtribe: Eristalina, Genus: Eristalinus. IDd before as Eristalinus megacephalus, but this species is of African and Palaearctic distribution.
