American Alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

Large crocodilian reptile found in the Southeastern United States. Prefers freshwater wetlands. These apex predators eat reptiles, birds, amphibians, fish and mammals. Very common in the area.

Habitat:

Man-made, freshwater lagoon. Not far from houses.

Notes:

This was a pretty large Alligator for the area. It probably was between 5-7 feet long. When the Alligators in the housing plantation get to a certain size, they are relocated away from people. There were houses along this lagoon on the opposite bank also lots of fish, birds and turtles. This was right next to a walking/bike path. It was spooked into the water by a friend of mine who got just a bit too close.
