Sylvilagus auduboni
The desert cottontail is light tan/gray colored with a whitish underside and has a round white cotton ball like tail. This individual was spotted in a grassy area within the Sugarite Canyon State Park in New Mexico.
Heavily forested with Ponderosa Pine and Gambel Oak trees. Lower elevations of the area consist of riparian habitats with cottonwood trees and willows while at higher elevations forests consist of Douglas fir, White Fir, and Aspen. Several grassy meadows are also found within forested areas.
