Eastern Cottonwood

Populus deltoides

Description:

I suspect that this is either eastern cottonwood or bigtooth aspen. Can anyone help? The caterpillars gathered on the tree are mourning cloak caterpillars.

Habitat:

Growing alongside a gravel road that leads into a deciduous forest

Notes:

The tree appears to be relatively young, as it is about eight feet tall.
