Description:

The male's chunky white body, combined with the brownish-black bands on translucent wings, give it a checkered look. Females have a brown body and a different pattern of wing spots.

Habitat:

Can be found around ponds, lakes, marshes, streams; adults may also be found some distance from water. Found in the 48 contiguous states and the range continues south into Mexico.
