Thanks David! I'll take a look around the internet. I don't have a guide for beetles, but that sounds like a good idea.

I am quite sure that this beetle belongs to the Rove Beetle family, Staphylinidae, but I am unable to identify it further. If you have beetle in hand, you may be able to key it out with a book such as How To Know The Beetles, Second Edition, by Ross H Arnett, Jr, Et. All., 1980

Thanks Eric! I had seen a rove beetle before, Platydracus sp., and it was quite different! Sounds like an amazing family. I'll try submitting to BugGuide as well. :)

Rove beetle, family Staphylinidae. Incredibly diverse family. Takes an expert on them to recognize most to subfamily let alone genus, species. Nice image, so you might get a more specific answer at some point.
