Eastern Gray Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Very common and native to the eastern and midwestern US as well as southern and eastern portions of Canada. Predominently gray coloration with a white belly. Some reddish coloration on face. There are several different color morphs of this species including black and white. There are pockets of albino populations as well in some areas. This squirrel species has been introduced in the western US and has established populations in various places.

Habitat:

Very adaptable and lives well in urban, suburban and woodlands (places where there are trees). This particular squirrel was spotted in a preserve in the Hilton Head Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC.

Notes:

Quite skittish and smaller in size compared to the suburban squirrels in my neighborhood on Long Island, NY.
