You do indeed have a Hypericum and my money is on Sandweed - Hypericum fasciculatum which likes it wet, can get as tall as you say and tends to have a rather irregular growing growing habit, which seems to be the case looking at your photos.

According to wikipedia, some members of the genus can get up to 12 meters tall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypericum. Though that still doesn't mean it is a hypericum species, I don't think that is a trait that rules it out as a possibility.

Flower does look similar, but to my knowledge St. John's Wort isn't a woody plant. Perhaps a related species
