Upside Down Jellyfish

Cassiopea

Description:

A small jellyfish that has the appearance of cauliflower, generally sitting on the bottom of a mangrove forest.

Habitat:

Mangrove

Notes:

When snorkeling in a mangrove, kicking your fins on the sediment will stir up enough dirt that it causes the water to become cloudy. This hinders the Cassiopea from utilizing photosynthesis to create food and as a result, they will rise from the floor and into stinging range! Lesson. Never kick your fins in a mangrove reef!
