Chaetodon unimaculatus
The name comes from the black teardrop on the side of the fish which in some larger specimens, the downward part of the teardrop fades, leaving a black spot. They have a strong snout and jaw for working on the coral which is their main item of diet, but they also eat algae and small invertebrate animals.
They do not form permanent partners, but individuals occupy large overlapping home ranges which they do not defend as a territory. Can grow to about 8 inches.
My first spotting of these beautiful fish. Always exciting to see a living thing for the first time! Do people say "lifer" for a first fish like they do about the first spotting of a bird?!
