Widow Skimmer, female

Libellula luctuosa

Description:

A big, showy skimmer with dark wing bases. The female has golden stripes down each side of her abdomen.

Habitat:

Lakes, ponds, and pools in slow streams of all kinds with mud bottoms and usually much vegetation in open and wooded habitats. Common at farm ponds and otehr created habitats.

Notes:

I spotted this female at the neighbor's pond 1/4 mile down the road, but I have seen them in my own yard also.
