Chicharra, Cicada

Tettigades chilensis

Description:

Family: Cicadidae
Order: Hemiptera

Habitat:

En Chile se encuentran desde la región de Coquimbo hasta la de Bío-bío.
In Chile found from Coquimbo to Bio-Bio provinces.

Notes:

They may not be that big, but they are bulky and seem very big.
Taken during a bicycle trip, there where thousands of these all over the place, the noise was deafening.
Many of these bugs bumped into me and my bike, stumbled a little and then flew along.
The shadow they cast as they flew past me was as if they where birds.

Thanks Yuko.
At first it was gross, but then you get used to it. They seem like clumsy birds; it's just odd to feel the weight of a bug bumping into you.

Great spotting! Love how they are so furry. Must have been a quite interesting experience to be bumped into by many cicadas.

I was fascinated by these fury things, as I had never seen live cicadas.
