Speckle-winged Rangeland Grasshopper

Arphia conspersa

Description:

Medium-sized, yellowish, brown, or gray in overall color. Note bright yellow abdomen and yellow hind tibiae ("shins"). Often with a yellow stripe down the middle of the back. Among the very first adult grasshoppers seen in spring. Very common species.

Habitat:

Found on south-facing slope, with open field of grasses and herbs, yucca, and Gambel's Oak.

Notes:

These grasshoppers fly well. The hind wings vary from bright yellow to orange, or even red in color. A crackling noise is often made in flight.
