Draco palm tree

Description:

The draco palm tree is very rare in Uruguay, it called my attention because ot its unique trunk and leaves and I was told it was especially planted and that it is very rare in our area. It takes very long for this kind of palm tree and this tree is unique because its resin becomes red when in contact with air; it is the only tree with this characteristic. This resin was used for different medicinal and coloring purposes; Stradivarious violins' wood, for example, was colored with draco trees resin.

Habitat:

The draco is a vulnerable kind of palm tree distributed in subtropical areas, mainly in Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde and Morocco . It is the natural symbol of Tenerife island. This particular one was spotted in Montevideo, Uruguay and was probably brought from those areas.
