Odocoileus virginianus
White-tailed deer vary in size across their range with the smallest subspecies living in southern Florida and ranging to animals that on the average are twice that size in the northern part of their range. Average sized deer in Minnesota weigh 180 lbs. or more. They are reddish brown in the summer and tend toward gray/brown in the winter. Males are larger than females and have antlers that are shed and regrown annually.
White-tailed deer have a wide range across much of the US and Canada, in a number of different habitats. They tend to avoid large open areas and are most often found in brushy forests and along tree-lined rivers in grasslands. Increasing numbers are found in suburban parks and mature wooded yards.

They are fast, aren't they? These deer were in a state park and are fairly habituated to humans so I got to take my time to get these photos. I also wonder if the deer here don't derive some protection from the area's wolves by staying close to human activity.
Gorgeous series Gordon. I saw a deer in the woods a few days ago, but she ran and jumped so fast, I wasn't prepared for a photo.
These deer had been feeding on low brush and rooting in the snow under a bird feeder for spilled sunflower seeds. As a result, they had snow on their faces. Their coats are so warm though that they lose little heat and so snow will stick to their coats for quite some time before either melting or, more likely, being brushed off. They are one of my favorite animals to watch and photograph....
Absolutely beautiful! Love the snow of the face!
Wonderful series - one of my favorite mammals!
