frangipani, bunga kamboja

Plumeria sp.

Description:

Flower of the charismatic species frangipani. Native to the neotropical region, species of the genus have been carried to all corners of the tropics owing to their beauty, and sweet fragrance, and they are an important element in many cultures. Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, however, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.

Habitat:

An ornamental planted from a cutting in a semi-urban environment of houses, yards & gardens and patches of remnant forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.
