Lancehead

Bothrops atrox

Description:

Pretty snake with an odd-shaped nose.

Habitat:

Dark, rich tropical forest. Réserve naturelle Trésor, French Guiana.

Notes:

Could illuminate the whole snake properly because I had only a small flash and the forest was very dark.

Yes, I was thinking B. atrox was the better ID because of some of the color pattern and eye stripe on your spotting. B. atrox is more widely spread.

Thank-you Brendan, that looks like a great ID. In reading about B. atrox and B. brazili, I read that in B. brazili "postocular stripe may be present, running from the eye to the angle of the mouth, pale brown in color and bordered below by a dark brown line," so may B. atrox is the best ID?

This looks like a species of Bothrops, venomous pit vipers endemic to South and Central America. They are commonly called lanceheads. This is most likely B. atrox or B. brazili. The nasal point is typical of these snakes.
