Green Heron

Butorides virescens

Description:

Though it is call a Green Heron you really don't see much green. Dark crown and back. Wings are dark with white streaks. Neck and chest on adults are reddish-brown with two stripes running down the center of the neck from white chin. Bill is dark by the face and yellow near the tip. Long necks but can kink it to make their neck seem short. Stumpy tail and medium length yellow legs.

Habitat:

Can be found mostly near water, like sloughs, ponds, lakes, swamps and marshes. Also could be found in pastures.

Notes:

Funny story. I heard a Loon and was trying to locate it. Then I see a sea lion. Yes, a sea lion in the slough many miles from the bay. As I was taking a picture of it, this bird landed 5ft from me. What a day.

Thank you, I knew something was off with the wing pattern and crown. But still a great spot. And still surprised it landed almost at my feet
