Sausage Ant

Dorylus sp.

Description:

Insect with elongated abdomen and triangular wings.Fished it out of the water so it is quite soggy-looking.

Habitat:

Belun Eco Resort near Katwa in west Bengal. Basically an area with minimal human interference. A river in the backyard (literally) and many water bodies (both natural and artificial)

Notes:

Never seen one before. When the worker ants will find it they will tear off its wings and take it to the virgin Queen as her consort. It will die shortly thereafter and the Queen will begin to lay eggs. Apparently the Masai use these ants to staple gaping wounds. Once the ant bites, the body is torn off and the mandibles serve as sutures and last for days. Limitless ants means this can be repeated for as long as needed. The sting hurts like crazy, I read.
