House Finch (fledgling)

Haemorhous mexicanus

Description:

I found this lone fledgling on the pavement chirping for a patent. I brought it up to the nearest tree and placed it in the mulched area surrounding it. I have been here for an hour and a half and no parent has stopped by to feed it. Another fledgling in the tree was fed twice, but the adults are not responding to this bird's cries. I have made sure to keep my distance in order to allow the parents to come forward, but they don't. One sparrow even pecked at the fledgling. I tried feeding it water soaked bread, but I don't think it ate any. I placed it as high in the tree as I could recently, along with some soaked bread. It has not touched it. It closes its eyes occasionally as if it is resting, and has stopped chirping for now. I am worried that it is dehydrated because when it was still on the ground it was panting (had its beak open). It has been on its own for probably over two hours. I really want to help it but I don't know what more to do. The adult birds in the area are house sparrows and some kind of finch (red breasted). The tree appears to be some sort of crabapple. Please help!

Habitat:

Found in an urban area on the sidewalk. Lots of pavement and road, with the exception of a mulched area with some sort of crabapple tree growing in it.

A parent finally came by and fed it, after approaching and flying away from it four or five times. Thank goodness.

I tried placing it in the tree, but it doesn't want to stay. At least it has been fed.

Mom and dad may be able to see something wrong with the little guy that you can't, other than that not sure why it would be ignored while siblings nearby are being fed. Hope it makes it, keep us updated if it's an area you can check on again!

No shoe box or bird seed, unfortunately. I had to choose from what I could find at CVS. I know that feeding large quantities of bread to birds is not a good idea, but I needed it in order to offer a source of water. I bought some peanut butter crackers, scraped off the peanut butter, and soaked the cracker portion in water.

The little guy has hopped across a few branches and is chirping again, but has yet to eat or to be fed.

If you have a shoebox, place some leaves in the bottom and stick this guy in it and place it securely in the tree. Give it a small bit of water too, but bread isn't good for birds. Put something like bird seed in there for it too, it should be able to eat on its own. Not sure why the parents would be feeding the others and not this guy, that is weird. But it is old enough that it can live on its own if it has easy access to food for the time being
