red breasted sapsucker

Sphyrapicus ruber

Description:

The red breasted sapsucker is divided into a Northern and southern population. The northern is a deeper red with the red extending into the yellow belly. The southern has white and black lining running faintly h\through the somewhat lighter red, reminiscent of the yellow bellied and red naped sapsuckers. I apparently live on the border as I get both color types. Not the black through the eye and running down the side of the head
