Tiger Moths in Ecuador are indeed tricky. Looking at the veins and the blushy markings on the hindwing, I think it is Amastus aconia.

Hi Susan, I'm not an expert on the moths of Ecuador but this looks like a member of the Arctiidae (Tiger Moth) family. It resembles a Ruby-headed Tiger moth (Amastus coccinator) or similar species. Sorry that I can't give you a definte ID. I know from a short visit to your country in 2011 that Ecuador certainly has some amazing moth species and I suspect a lot of them are still undocumented.
