Click Beetle

Semiotus distinctus

Description:

A movement that does (and which gives its common name to the beetle) is to "pop" the body to perform a small jump, caused by a movement of "self-catapult".

Habitat:

Can be found in southern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. I found this specimen in the school where I teach, a region near a transition between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest.

Notes:

"Semiotus distinctus" is a species of beetle belonging to the family "Elateridae". Basic colour of the body varies from reddish-yellow to ferrugineous. Pronotum shows a single longitudinal median dark streak and deep scattered punctures, while elytra have two stripes and poorly impressed striae.
