Cicadas are tricky to identify. I'd suggest submitting the image to Bug Guide for a confirmed identification

Hi turner terry, it is a Cicada. If you do a Google search for Cicada and select images, you should find a close match to yours, then check what is local to the area you saw it and you may well find the species.
