Red fox

Vulpes vulpes

Description:

Found and seen a lot of red foxes by the roadsides in Utoro going to Shiretoko. Long body and tail, short shaggy light brown fur.

Habitat:

The Japanese red fox inhabits the plains, forests, cultivated lands, farmlands and can also be seen around the villages of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The main red fox species is found throughout Eurasia and North America. Nocturnal, the Japanese red fox is active at sunset and in the early morning. Its smell and hearing are particularly developed: they enable the Japanese red fox to skillfully hunt down mice and quails.
