Description:

An understory tree with fragrant leaves. This picture is of a seedling that shows the three leaf shapes common in sassafras: oval, mitten, and three-lobed (bird-foot). The root has been used to make tea and other beverages, although there is evidence that that the plant produces a carcinogen.

Habitat:

Well-lit mixed woods.
