Raccoon

Procyon lotor

Description:

The name “raccoon” came from an Algonquian Indian word for this medium-sized carnivore. The raccoon has a light buff colored underside, and when viewed on a tree branch from below their light color blends in with the light skin and when its viewed from above their dark color blends into the dark forest floor. There are different animals from different places that share the same environment as the raccoon, like dogs, foxes because raccoon pretty much lives everywhere due to the fact that they will just eat anything. Cougars and Raccoon shared a symbiotic relationship called Parasitism means that the other organism benefit and the other is harmed, In this cause, the predator which is the cougar eats the raccoon, and the prey which is the raccoon was killed and so it was harmed. The mask of black fur that covers its eyes is its most characteristic and familiar feature of a raccoon, One hypothesis for the dark fur is that it may help reduce glare and enhance the nocturnal animal’s night vision, and also raccoon has grayish brown fur, and almost 90% of it helps to insulate the animal against the cold. These species are mammals, so they reproduce sexually but Raccoons pair only to mate and do not form long-term bonds. The females ovulate spontaneously and give birth to 3-5 babies a year. Males raccoon will mate with more than one female and do not share in the raising up of young raccoons.

Habitat:

Originally raccoons lived in the tropics where they could be found foraging along riverbanks, but Raccoon populations do very well in urban areas, primarily due to hunting and trapping restrictions, a general lack of predators, and an abundance of available human food. Raccoon pretty much eats EVERYTHING!! Raccoon are omnivorous and opportunistic carnivores. In spring they eat food such as fish, arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, a few small mammals, birds, and eggs. In the summer and fall they eat large amounts of grains, acorns, other nuts, and fruits. In the winter, they live off their fat store as well as carrion, an occasional small mammal or rodent and sometimes even bark. Raccoons prefer forest areas near a stream or water source, but have adapted to various environments and Raccoon populations can get quite large in urban areas, owing to hunting and trapping restrictions, few predators, and human-supplied food.
