Bighorn sheep are named for the large curved horn's. female bighorn sheep also have horns, but they are shorter with less curvature.They range in color from light brown to grayish or dark, chocolate brown, with a white rump and lining on the backs of all four legs. Males usually weigh 127 to 316 lb , are 36 to 41 in tall at the shoulder, and 69 to 79 long from the nose to the tail. Females are usually 75 to 188 lb , 30 to 36 in tall and 54 to 67 in long. Dall sheep, Ovis dalli, is a species of sheep native to northwestern North America, ranging from white to slate brown in color and having curved yellowish brown horns, these sheep share the same environment with bighorn sheep.Bighorn sheep have a parasitism symbiotic relationship with bears, wolves, cougars, and other predators that hunt bighorn sheep.Big horn sheep are sexual,In the fall, the rams compete for female sheep by having butting contests. They charge each other at speeds of more than 20 mph, their foreheads crashing with a crack that can be heard more than a mile away. These battles can last up to 24 hours.Gestation is 5-6 months,they have 1 lamb.Lambs are born with a soft, woolly, light-colored coats and small horns. Within a day, a lamb can walk and climb as well as its mother. A lamb will stay with its mother for the first year of its life.
Bighorn sheep can be found in alpine meadows, grassy mountain slopes and foothill areas near rugged, rocky cliffs and bluffs.Bighorn sheep have distinct seasonal ranges,even though most of the year is spent on the winter range at lower elevations.Bighorn sheep of all ages are threatened by bears, wolves and cougars.Bighorn sheep eat different foods depending on the season. During the summer, they subsist on grasses or sedges. During the winter they eat more woody plants like willow, sage and rabbit brush
