Actaea pachypoda
Small plant about 50 cm tall found along the side of a shaded walking trail. Native to eastern North America. This plant produces white berries, aka White Baneberry, which contain cardiogenic toxins that are highly poisonous to humans, but not to birds. Interestingly, Native Americans and settlers both made tea out of the roots to relieve pain during childbirth and from other ailments.
