Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl

Gallus lafayetii

Description:

The Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl is the national bird of Sri Lanka,It is endemic. The male is Very colorful , sporting striking plumage plus a highly exaggerated wattle and comb..It is closely related to the Red Junglefowl (G. gallus), the wild junglefowl from which the chicken was domesticated. In Sinhala it is known as "Wali Kukula" - Jungle Fowl

Habitat:

Distributed commonly in Sri Lanka 's jungle and dense scrub land. Roosts high in trees at night. Flies up to tree branches when threatened. Nests in hidden, scraped place on the ground or on a pile of vegetation just off the ground.

Notes:

The specific name of the Sri Lankan Junglefowl commemorates the French aristocrat Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette.
