Eumaeus atala

Description:

The atala as a pupa are an orange color. In the second image there in an atala larva (a.k.a. caterpillar) which is a red color with yellow spots along the back. The red color is a warning sign to birds and other predators that it is poisonous.

Habitat:

I found the atala in Fairchild tropical botanic garden. Fairchild tropical botanic garden, is one of the few places you can see a successful population of these what was thought to be extinct in Florida from 1937 until 1959.

Gorgeous caterpillar! Would you consider adding to this mission of caterpillars of the Southeastern USA? http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1723...
