Sarracenia purpurea
This pitcher plant was about 12 cm long and 5 cm wide. The rim of the plant is coated with a slippery substance moisturised by the condensation or nectar. It is used to cause the insects to slip and fall into the trap. The inside of the Pitcher plant is coated with a waxy substance which is used to drown the insect, then gradually dissolve it before eating the insect.
This pitcher plant was found in the Flower dome in Gardens by the Bay, Singapore. It was in very sunny and moist area in a large greenhouse dome. It was grown in a very rich environment that contained plenty of oxygen and extra nutrients for the plants.
The small amount of liquid inside the pitcher plant is used to drown the insects. It also has a layer of waxy substance that lines the walls of the trap to make sure the insect cannot climb out.
