Syngnathus scovelli
Related to seahorses, pipefish have a long, slender body with a small, pipe shaped mouth. This was the only green pipefish we caught, and we thought it was a different species, but turned out to be the female of the species we had been catching the most.
Found along the coasts in warm waters, they often hide out in reefs and mats of seaweed.
I was on a field trip sampling for fish. All the fish we caught were seined up, then we put them in buckets to look at them. The fish was only out of the water for a few seconds for us to take pictures, then were returned to the water when we were done.
