Description:

Black insect ~ 2 cm long. Abdomen is concave on dorsal side and has dark red margin. Appearance has some superficial similarities to species in order Hemiptera, but the telltale half wings do not seem to be present.

Habitat:

Semi-arid windward tropical insular ridge of mixed shrubland and grassland. Original ecosystem modified by long-term human presence.

Notes:

Spotted on the curb along the road to Makapuu Lighthouse on Oahu.

tmvdh - Thanks for the suggestion. I've done some looking around online and I think you are right. Unfortunately, I could not narrow the identification any further.

Looks like a species of the bug family Reduviidae.
