Virginia opossum

Didelphis virginiana

Description:

For some reason, opossums have a shoddy reputation. Maybe because most people only see them run over on the road. But look at that face - they are so cute! They remind me of old gray-haired ladies wearing fingerless gloves. This lady was perched on the tree right outside of my window. Here's a couple of reasons to appreciate 'possums: 1) they're the only marsupial in the United States, so they're very unique; 2) they have prehensile tails, which they can use to help them hold things; and 3) they have opposable thumbs on their back feet, like little hands, to help them climb.

Habitat:

Treed suburbs
